ANANYA BHAKTI (SINGLE POINTED DEVOTION)

" 'Mother is with us every moment.' To feel Her presence every moment, it is absolutely necessary to have single pointed devotion, faith and sadhana. Each and every aspect of our life should be associated only with Mother. "

Guntur ashram, 11.12.2002

At 8 a.m. Nanna was speaking about Single pointed devotion:

" Raghunath Goswami is a great devotee. He spent all his time on the banks of Radha kund. He never left Radha kund. One day Roopa Goswami and Sanatana Goswami went near him and invited him to an idol installation ceremony being held in Radha Govind mandir. They informed him that their Guru also came to grace the occasion. They specially invited him to participate in the ceremony as he is a great devotee and renowned person. Raghunath Goswami replied 'You are inviting me to come there! How can I leave Mother and come? I cannot come.' "

" They wondered who the Mother he is speaking about is because his parents died when he was a child. He left everybody at a young age and came to Brindavan by walk. Then why is talking about his Mother? "

" Raghunath Goswami clarified. 'You fools. For your eyes, this is only a kund (a pond). But for me, it appears like Mother. I cannot leave this Mother and go anywhere even for a moment. If I come there, even as the ceremony is going on, I will die. Please excuse me. I will stay near Mother only.' Finally he did not attend the ceremony. "

" He would sit in the scorching heat and do penance and dhyana. Mother would feel sorry that the sun rays are falling on him directly and he is suffering the heat. She would stand behind him; hold her veil to obstruct the sun rays from falling on him directly. In this way, She took care of him so meticulously. Sanatana Goswami saw this scene and told Raghunath Goswami 'Mother is standing behind you to protect you. She is bearing the heat. You must build a hermitage and meditate inside. Then She will not bear this inconvenience.' Only then Raghunath Goswami got up from his position. Till then he did not even have a hut. He realized that Mother is present not only outside but within too. Thus Mother will take care of us at all times. "

" It is important that you must learn to see Mother everywhere. Give the same respect to everyone as you would give to Mother. I know that you are coming to me to know more about Mother. It is my duty to respect you. I asked the people here to light incense sticks. I don't think of you as someone different (from Her). You came here to meet the people who are associated with Mother. You are Her devotees and I must respect you. That's why these incense sticks are lit. You must take some offering from our hands. That is the purpose of serving coffee. Even a drop is enough. We must not speak about Mother without having Her Prasad (oblation). In anticipation of your visit, I made sure that mats are spread, doors are open and lights are switched on. In the same way, you must not think of anyone as an ordinary person. Respect him and every devotee as you respect Mother. This is very important. "

Nanna is practically demonstrating ananya bhakti. That mahatma is seeing only Mother in everyone. He arranged coffee and food for everyone who came to listen to his talk on dhyana yoga. He decided that the speaker (himself) and listeners should accept Her Prasad. By saying that we must respect devotee as we respect Her, he explained the inner meaning of ananya bhakti.

" The gopikas diligently follow this principle. They love each other as much as each of them loves Krishna. This must be understood properly because this fact was stated by Krishna himself. One day in Dwaraka, Krishna was suffering from unbearable headache and fever. No medicine could give him any relief. Narada met him and asked about the remedy for his headache. Krishna replied 'collect the dust from the feet of the person who loves me, mix it in water and give me that potion. That is the only medicine.' Narada asked Rukmini to provide this medicine as she is a pious lady who loves Krishna. She refused saying it is a sin to give the dust of her feet to the Lord. In the same way, nobody including all his wives refused to give the dust of their feet. They were not willing to do so because they are ordinary mortals in the world. "

" Narada found this very strange. He went back to Krishna. Then he asked Narada to go to Brindavan. When he reached there all the gopikas surrounded him and asked about Krishna's welfare. 'How is our sakha, our dear friend? Does he think of us? He made us mad.' Narada told them about Krishna's predicament and added 'Nobody in Dwaraka could do what he wanted. He sent me here because you are supposedly great!' He also cautioned them that whoever gives the dust of their feet will go to hell. "

" 'We prefer to go to hell than see him suffer. We don't want heaven. We swear on Krishna that we want hell only. Please take the dust of our feet.' All the Gopikas came forward and competed with each other to be the one to offer the dust. Finally all of them danced together chanting the name of Krishna. Narada took the dust generated by their dance and returned to Dwaraka. Saying 'this is what I want', Krishna drank the potion and got up. "

" This leela is enacted in Puri Jagannath temple in Orissa even today. They say that that he has fever, so there is no seva or Prasad."

" This is a great leela of love. He showed the world the depth of their love. The gopikas never expressed themselves openly. They were engrossed in their families. They were under the illusion that they belong to their family. The truth is that they are only apparently leading a family life, but it is not really so. They have no expectations at all. Their love is so deep. "

" Haridasji Maharaj was a devotee residing in Brindavan. His parents pressured him to get married. Though he resisted a lot, they insisted and he finally agreed. Yet they did not have any relationship as husband and wife. She gave up food from that same day and became weak and thin. Her appearance suggested that she was nearing death. When she sensed that the time for her to leave this world approached, she directly went to nidhivan saying 'I am coming for my husband. He is not my husband; he is a sakhi I too want to become a sakhi. I will become a sakhi if I pray to him.' He sat down for bhajan early in the morning with his eyes open. She went to him directly and asked whether he would grant her wish. He said 'Mother will grant you.' She collapsed and died that same instant. This is an incident that really happened in Brindavan. It is clear that their only desire and aim was to go near Mother. All these worldly pleasures and relationships were not important. She never touched her husband nor even saw him. In fact she refused to see him. He too thought in the same way. We also must attain such devotion. They are fragments of Mother. That is why they got such great bhava. Their power is enormous. "

" I will tell you about another devotee who possessed tremendous power. He proved that even there is no need to know about Mother; hear Her story or read Her leelas. It is also not necessary to be a Hindu. Mother chose a nine year old Muslim boy for Her leela. The boy named Rehman was studying in Mathura near Brindavan. During those days, Mathura was known for the conflicts between Hindus and Muslims who were perpetually fighting against each other with swords and daggers. The boy chosen by Mother was the son of a Muslim leader. Strangely she chose this particular boy! This is one of Her significant leelas. One day when he was on his way to school, he saw a temple on the road and found the doors were open. He simply felt like looking in that direction and peeped inside. He saw Mother's idol before him. As he looked at the idol, he felt as if She was beckoning him to come near Her. No doubt it was an idol but the bhava touched him. That is what Her bhava loka means. She gives each one a different bhava. They are transformed by this bhava. I will now tell you how that bhava is given by Her. She gave him the bhava and he went inside the temple feeling as if he was being called. He asked someone who She was. They said 'She is Shyama.' He did not know who Shyama is because he was not a Hindu. In fact he knew nothing about Radha. Please understand that he is not a Hindu and did not know anything about our religious customs. Though he did not know about Shyama, the idol called him near Her. This leela shows that when the time to reach Her approaches, it is not even necessary to know about Her."

" Recall the verse in Vedas 'Nayamatma pravachena labhyaha' . Mother cannot be attained with talks and penance only. Though they may appear as sadhanas, they are really not so. What did that little boy practice? What did he know about Radha? He never even heard her name. Someone had to tell him that She is Shyama. When he ate the prasad that was given to him, 'Shyama Shyama' began to be repeated within him. "

" When dhyana yoga fructifies, you cannot live without Mother. The vocal tune will come from within - Radhe Radhe Radhe..Even if your husband or someone prohibits you, it cannot be stopped. We did not surrender our self to our family. We surrender only to Radhaji. Remember that you must not surrender to anyone in this world. You must serve them and discharge your duties. As a wife you have some responsibilities towards your husband. But that is all; don't go beyond that. You have no other obligations. We are not restricted by religion. We must yearn for Mother only. "

" Madalasa was prepared to give up her kingdom and family. She was married to a king. Yet she said 'I completed the work that I have been assigned by mother. I showed the world how to conduct their life. Now I am going to the forest for penance.' She gave up the kingdom, king, family, wealth; everything. No one knew where she went. The malayala swami read about the life of Madalasa and realized how exemplary it is. Then he arranged for books to be printed on her life. "

" Even if someone says negative about Mother, don't listen to them. The whole world comes only after Her. Her happiness should come before your happiness. Do not leave Mother for the sake of your comforts or sensual pleasures. Never ever leave Her. She is so very precious. It is difficult to quantify how precious She is! "

Nanna clearly stated that the bond of Mother's love is much stronger than these worldly relationships. Even the responsibly of a wife towards her husband are limited and specific - serving the family and abiding by your dharma. But if we are fortunate and once our dhyana fructifies and Mother's voice becomes a melodious tune within us, then no relationship exists. The whole world comes only after mother. Nanna often quoted the life of Madalasa, the Maha Yogini and stressed how she effortlessly gave up her husband, family and kingdom for Mother.

" When Dhruvdasji was weeping at Mother's feet, She placed Her left foot on his forehead. Earlier Goddess Kali wrote something on Kalidasa's tongue and he became a poet. With the touch of Mother's foot, Dhruvdasji became a rasika. A rasika scales many times higher than a poet. Mother granted him that knowledge of rasa. Goddess Kali granted Kalidasa some knowledge. But Radhaji granted the highest knowledge ever; that which cannot be attained even by Rishis and Yogis. She granted such rasika vidya with Her left foot! That is Radha! We are doing dhyana on such a Mother. We are watching such a Mother. "

" You must not make excuses of relatives visit and miss dhyana yoga classes. You must simply leave everybody. You must not attach importance to anything else. Today I woke up at 2a.m. because I know you will come. Now it ma be 3 or 4 a.m. I arranged for mats to be spread, doors opened and lights kept on. This is not due to my concern for you but due to my concern for Her. You also must show such love for Mother. This is my wish. We are born for a specific purpose. We have come from some astral world. She selected us for a purpose and made us sit here today. She will not choose each and every person. "

Nanna taught with tenderness, sweetness and love. The highest knowledge, rasika vidya is granted by Mother. When Radhasakhi tells about Radha in his lectures on dhyana yoga, we must forget the whole world and be immersed only in his lectures. But most of us including me give importance to worldly matters and give excuses to skip these lectures. That is why Nanna cautioned us about this.

Radhasakhi who cannot be attained even by Brahma and other Gods even in dhyana said that he woke up early and made arrangements for us. He said that we too must show such love for Mother. These words show how valuable Sri Radha dhyana is! He reminded us that being parts of Mother at one time, how powerful we were. We have the fortune of seeking Her grace. The words that 'Mother selected us' uttered by none other than Radhasakhi are not ordinary ones. We must retain that grace by incessant Radha dhyana. He clarified that Her grace cannot be obtained easily by narrating an incident.

" A man in village Medukonduru, about ten miles from here dug a pit. He sat in his pit and performed penance. He is a great yogi. Once went to Brindavan and stayed in Brahmachari's ashram. He had lunch and relaxed for some time. In his sleep, someone came near him with a stick and threatened 'this is not your place. You don't belong here. You must leave immediately.' He fled from there. Even in the railway station, the person appeared and said 'Why are you still here? Leave from here this very instant.' He left Brindavan right away. "

" Later he approached me and asked why he was asked to leave Brindavan. I assured him that I would send him to Brindavan and also gave him the money for train ticket. I told him that we would be leaving for Brindavan in a couple of days and he could accompany us. On the scheduled date of departure, he came near me and said 'The deity who I worship appeared before me and told me not to go to Brindavan because it is not our place. So I decided not to go to Brindavan. I will go back to my village.' So he was prompted by his Goddess! "

" It is not so easy to come to Brindavan. You may not be able to visit there even if you have the money. We are all indebted to this soil of Vraja sometime in our previous births. Do not give up this opportunity that you have been provided. It is a golden chance. We are waiting for you all since 4 a.m. without even thinking of eating and sleeping. Mother is taking such personal care of you. I wish that all of you must come tomorrow and each day that follows. Radhe Radhe Govinda. "

Later Nana asked us how that day's talk was. We were overwhelmed and said 'No words...to explain'. Nanna would wait for us by 4 a.m. everyday with such love. All arrangements were be made by then. He would make us sit down for meditation. Nanna waiting for us means Mother's attention towards us. That is why he said that 'She is taking personal care of you'. Such kindness and love! Those golden days ended. Nanna please take us near you at the earliest.
