NEITHER FATHER NOR MOTHER

Brindavan ashram, July 2001

Nanna's birthday and Gurupoornima fall in the month of July. It is a great fortune to be in his presence in Brindavan at that time. With Nanna's blessings, Sekhar and I came to Brindavan.

" Look up to Mother for everything. She only is your Guru. She only is your God. "

" Your guru is Radha. Your God is Radha. The one who directs you on the right path is Radha. This is true not only in the upper worlds but also on earth. She gives you food and shelter and enables you to move forward in your sadhana. She is showing me this very clearly. Celebrating Mother's festival, chanting Her name; it is Mother who is making you adopt this form of sadhana. We human beings cannot do so. The beginning, middle and end - all are Her doing only. "

" The first step is 'Yagyanam japa yagyosmi. "

" The second is 'Ananyaschintayantho'. "

" One is rituals and other is chintana (contemplation). Even this constant thought is not enough. "

" The third step is 'Bahunam janmanamanthe'. "

" A mahatma is difficult to find in this world. Krishna left the decision of fighting or not to Arjuna only. When Arjuna asked what he must do Krishna said Yathecchasi tatha kuru (Do whatever you wish.) He did not tell him what to do. Krishna remained detached. That is the actual Krishna. "

" Once Vivekananda went to Jeruselam. There he questioned a yogi what is real dhyana of Christ. "

" The yogi stated three steps: "

" 1. Go into your room. There is no mention of any guru. It implies that the room only is the means of sadhana. "

" 2. Close the doors behind you. There should be no outwardness. This is nothing but 'Antarmukha samaradhyayai namaha bahirmukha sudurlabhayai' "

" 3. Pray in silence. Silence means without name and form. In fact there is no mantra in silence. "

" Garg Mahaprabhu wrote in one book that even if you go to any temple or ashram, there is no God there. It is only a statue or idol. He recited a verse too. He made a statement and left. He did not bother if someone heard him or not. It is up to each individual whether to implement his words or not. It does not matter to him. "

" Pray in utter silence. There is no mantra or rituals in silence. "

" The last step, which is above all these steps, must be introduced into your lives. Then only it will reach the receptive stage. I will explain the life of a person who attains such a state with some examples. We must also try to attain the state of their life. Please note down. "

" There are two aspects of tattwa - knowledge related to tattwa and experience related to tattwa. So far we spoke about the knowledge aspects. We must also feel that experience. First we must listen to the lives of those who experienced tattwa. You must see and visualize. It cannot be said in words. You must experience it. Those who gain knowledge are scholars; those who gain experience are rasikas. I shall first tell you about Rasika tattwa. "

" Mother did not come when Bhagawata was narrated. Her sakhis also did not come because She said there was not a single rasika in that gathering. So far nobody gave the correct explanation why Mother was not present while narrating the Bhagawata. Neither the organizers nor devotees could please God. They did not attain the grace of God. "

'Even Suka maharshi?'

" I did not mention Suka Maharshi. I told about devotees. If rasikas are not present, then how can rasa be present? "

Whenever Nanna explained the all pervading nature of Sri Radha, he stressed that She is not restricted to temples only; She should not be worshipped like that. He often quoted Sage Garg who said that God is not found only in an idol, a small stone. God should be worshipped as an all pervading entity. This is the right way of worship.

Saying that the last step above these steps should be introduced in your lives, Nanna added

" the lives of persons who experienced rasa cannot be said in words. It must be seen and practiced and understood. "

Knowing the right way of sadhana, practicing inwardness and then utter silence - these constitute theory. This is the knowledge of tattwa. The final step above these three steps is experiencing tattwa -rasika tattwa. Nanna said that we must observe the lives of rasika mahatmas and try to experience that rasika tattwa.

Nanna spoke about his personal experience of rasika tattwa:

" 1. Waning of ego and attachments. "

" 2. Severe grief of separation from Mother, so much that you cannot live without Her. "

" 3. Rasika devotion. He must definitely be a rasika devotee. Only because there was not a single rasika in Suka maharshi's gathering, She is not present in Bhagawata. No special mention is made about Her qualities. Mother called Sri Suka and said that neither She nor Her sakhis came because there is not a single rasika in that gathering. She instructed him not to mention about Her tattwa in his discourse. In the 7 days of discourses, Sri Suka never mentioned about Mother or Her eight sakhis. "

" Rasika mahatmas are they who do not contemplate on name and form. The rasa of God's love is their deity, their God. This is the tattwa. Give up the other two and hold this. "

'Nanna, do you mean giving up ego and attachments and holding the rasika tattwa?'

" Right. These are the important points. How many have actually implemented these in their lives? Very few. First I will tell you about King Kulachandra. "

'...Nanna, I am waiting to note down..'

" I told everything. It is over. "

Just by uttering the name of Kulachandra, Nanna went into a state of Radha bhava. Filled with bhava of sacrifice shown by the King and that rasika devotion, he thought he narrated the story and said 'It's over'.

" The sacrifice of Kulachandra is extra ordinary. "

'Yes, you mentioned just now..'

" There is nothing about my personal life; only about their lives. The second devotee is Rehman. Third is Gulab Baba. What did he say? "

'He said that one who does not serve Mother does not deserve to live'.

" They are true rasika devotees. There are some devotees who pray in one room and commit murder in the next room. How bad that is! "

" A rasika devotee should assimilate Radha tattwa himself and then strive to propagate the tattwa in the world. An ordinary person may feel that he cannot live without his family. Who caused these feelings? "

'Man himself.'

" Why? "

'Due to Maya.'

" That's right. These are known as worldly dharmas. Krishna told to give up these dharmas 'Sarva dharman parityajya..'. Give up all worldly dharmas and hold the dharma of the Lord. That is self surrender. What did he preach? "

" Mata nasti pita nasti bandhu sahodharaha.' (Neither mother nor father; siblings nor relatives). "

" He did not preach this just like that. Sri Sankaracharya will not lie. He left his mother though she had no one to look after her and accepted sanyas. What does this mean? Lord Buddha left behind his aged parents, wife and a young son and simply, silently left the palace. That's what they did- giving up worldly dharmas. There are many human beings who are not following even the wordly dharmas. "

" 'Paritranaya sadhunam vinasacha dukskrutam' "

" God is destroying the evil people. Why is he destroying them? Why is he killing them? Only because he cannot reform them! Isn't it? "

'Nanna, why can't he reform them?'

" I don't know: may be he did not reform them because he is not interested in doing so. Whatever may be the reason, he did not reform them. He killed the evil persons. We are praising him for what he did. For us he is great but Mother did not agree with his way. She demonstrated Her way through the life of Naravahana, a dacoit. He admitted himself that he was responsible for thousands of women and children becoming orphans and that he destroyed several families. Such a person returned all the wealth that he amassed. He even gave away the clothes he was wearing, became a sanyasi, wore a linen cloth and settled down under a tree. "

" Next, you must mention about Vijayakrishna Goswami. He broke the seat of the Guru into pieces. There is nothing wrong in including this point also. "

Then Nanna asked me to read out what I had written till then.

'Radha is your Guru. Radha is your God. Radha is the one who will show you the right path. Only Radha alone will guide you in this world and other worlds too! You said that Guru means only Radha, nothing else. Then you told about the three steps preached in Gita. The 1st step is 'Yagnyanam japa yagnyosmi.'

Nanna continued.

" People used to perform rituals. But there is no gain by penance and chanting name alone. You can quote from Vedas 'Nayamatma pravachana labhyaha....' similarly what did the Vedas say? What did Vivekananda say? He said that is foolish to think that you will obtain the grace of God just by repeating name and doing penance as if you can buy vegetables by paying money. You must write this fact bluntly. You must attack in such a way that the other person cannot speak. "

'The next point is 'Ananyaschinthayanto mam...' Gita described described about single pointed concentration.'

" They also mentioned another point, the highest one. "

'Bahuman janmanam te...'

" Yes. He is the real mahatma! Only such a person is a mahatma. Though you chant the name of God countless times in a day, you cannot become a mahatma. Even though you have single pointed concentration, you cannot become a mahatma. Only he who sees god everywhere is a mahatma. In support of this statement, you can quote Prahlada. It is not contemplation as an individual. His entire life is itself contemplation on God. That is the difference between an ordinary man and a mahatma. "

'Nanna, can we say that one who gained knowledge of tattwa is a scholar and one who gained experience is a rasika?'

" No, he is only a yogi. "

'Then can we say that one who gained experience of rasika tattwa is a rasika?'

Nanna remained silent. After some time, I read out from the book.

'When someone as great as Sri Suka gave discourses on Bhagawata, Parikshit asked only for moksha. That means there was not a single rasika in that gathering. It is for this reason that Mother forbade him from speaking about Her tattwa or Her sakhis.'

Explaining the lives of rasika devotees, Nanna said:

" King Kulachandra is a great warrior. It is very difficult for the enemies to defeat him. Whenever he saw Mother and the cows before him, he would raise his hands to salute them and stop fighting. "

" The young devotee Rehman had bruises all over his body. He faced so much humliation and was plagued with hunger. Yet, even in that peak cold weather, he went to Brindavan. He was prepared to bear all extremity but did not give up Mother. This is how a rasika devotee lives! "

One who experiences the tattwa is not necessarily a rasika devotee. Only he, whose entire life is devoted to rasa; who lives only for Mother's happiness is a rasika. That's why, when I asked Nanna whether one who experiences tattwa is a rasika, he remained silent.

On the occasion of Nanna's birthday, Babu (a devotee from Guntur ashram) came to Brindavan.

'Nanna, we wish that you remain before our eyes forever, without leaving us. The path shown by you will be implicitly followed by us.'

" I will remain like this. But you will not. I will remain because I have no death. "

'We want you physically also Nanna.'

" That is Mother's will! I belong to Her. I am Her possession. Suppose you have some vegetables at home. Can you say that they must remain as such without being cooked? Will anyone pay heed to your words? Nobody has a right to do so. They must be used some day. Recently I asked Mother when She will take me back near Her. She sent word that there are some works to be finished here by using me as Her instrument. She will think about my coming there after completing those works. She never specified any time, only completion of jobs. She may keep me alive for 1000 years or 10000 years even! "

" I am not bound by karma. My life span is not related to karma. One day She will call me and I shall leave. It is that simple. I am not bound by horoscope or karma. "

" She took me into Her service when I was in Government service. At that time I had only Rs 50 for travel and no more money. Yet She took me along with 7-8 people. How would I take care of them I really didn't know. They also did not have anyone to look after them, so they accompanied me. I did not even know in which direction to proceed. She took me out in such a state and brought me to this state today. This is the secret which no one mentioned so far. "

Once Nanna said

" 'Mother is Immortal; I also am Immortal.' Even now he is saying the same 'I will remain because I have no death.' 'Ever since Mother is present, sakhi is also present and will remain as long as Mother exists!' "

Like Radhaji, Nanna, the Radhsakhi is eternal with neither beginning nor end. Then how can such a sakhi be bound by karma? That's why he declared that he has no karma. Such a Nanna is our guru, our God and our dearest sakhi. O benevolent Radha! We don't want any other sadhana except our Nanna.

The next morning he continued:

" Don't interrupt me. You can ask any questions later. "

" When I was DEO, I was traveling by train to Anantapur in first class with some luggage. About twenty people including Amma and Nanna came to meet me in Guntur station. When she saw me she asked me to alight from the train. I tried to explain that I am holding a responsible position in job. The Governor is arriving in a couple of days and I am responsible for all arrangements. I promised to stay in their house in my return journey. Please listen carefully. This is my life. She refused to listen to me. She insisted that I gat down saying any work can be done later. I tried to reason with her but she did not relent. Saying 'I know what you are saying. Still, you must get down here' she began to weep. Unable to see her tears, I decided that it does not matter what ever happens to my job and alighted the train. We all went home. Around 25 friends came to see me. I ate food along with them. All my favorite dishes were prepared. I also had my head bath. Now follow carefully. This is an important incident in my life. By 9 a.m. I had a head ache on one side only. Within an hour the pain started on both sides. By 10.30 a.m. I had fever. They wanted to call the doctor at 11.30 a.m. but a goddess entered Guntur amma's body and said 'this illness cannot be cured by the doctors. Don't call them. They should not enter inside this room.' So no doctor was called. Slowly about 40-50 people including my wife came to see me. They began to argue that 'Nannagaru does not belong to you only. Why are you refusing to call the doctor? Why are you so stubborn?' Nobody replied. My condition remained the same. "

" Exactly at 7 p.m. a goddess appeared and said 'The law of the world is that Lord Brahma writes the life span of each and every human being on his forehead as soon as he is born - the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds that every human being will live. That is Brahma's order which must strictly be followed. Otherwise God imposes very strict punishment. As per his karma, his life span will end at 2.15 a.m. It is possible to prolong his life span by linking it another life span. This is possible if anyone of you is ready to sacrifice a part of your life span.' We do not know who that great Goddess is! We named our ashram after that Goddess, Radha Mahalaksmi ashram. "

" No one responded to the Goddess, neither my wife nor anyone else. The owner of that house promised 'Dear Goddess. We don't know who you are. You asked us and we are giving you our life. You can take how much life span he needs. We are willing to give up our lives happily even tomorrow morning. We have looked after him like our son. So we must give him our life. After us, he will look after this ashram and improve it. The goddess left. Till then, I had the life span ordained by Brahma. Since that moment my life span increased due to both of them sparing their life span. "

"At the time of birth itself, Brahma writes his lifespan on man's forehead. And it must be done accordingly." But in his case, karma could not do anything. Because he is the unique wealth of rasa belonging to Sri Radha; he is Her dear sakhi. In such a case, karma is under Nanna's control not he being under karma's control. However in order to reveal to the world this truth, the pretext of his fatal illness was created. Once again the saying that 'Mata nasti pita nasti....' came true.

Nanna then described another important incident in his life.

" I was working as DEO. At 8 a.m. a little girl came near me. Listen carefully. She asked me 'How will you serve the government. When will you come into my service? The little girl is none other than Mother. She was wearing the typical jewel- chandrika, worn only by Sri Radha. I was over whelmed that Mother Herself came near me. Thinking how lucky I am, I got down the chair saying 'Mother! From this moment, I belong to you. You can keep me as long as You wish'. I fell at Her feet. But She wasn't there. She left." (Nanna said in a voice hoarse with emotion.) "

" In the morning, I resigned from my job. I informed everybody that I was leaving. The train was scheduled at 10 a.m. There were about 7-8 people with me. Lord Buddha left his palace alone. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came out into the world alone. Unlike them, I had 6-8 people who said that they had nobody else and would remain with me till their death. Some of them are still with me. Mother did not instruct me where to go and what to do. She did not even tell me in which way I must serve Her. Yet I proceeded. She inspired the thought to take the first train that arrives. The train towards Berhampur arrived first. We took a horse cart for persons and luggage and went in search of a Radhakrishna temple. Even after searching the whole town, we could not find the temple. The driver of the cart lost patience and told us to get down. Just then, an unknown person came near us and informed that a temple was being constructed at the end of the lane. We all went near that place and kept our luggage. We had no money even to buy some food from the market and the responsibility of so many people was on me. "

" At that time a 60 year old merchant came near me. He said 'some one told me that you can relieve the people from their karmas just by placing your hand on their head. That is why I came to you?' When I asked him who informed him about this, he did not reply. I had a doubt that it was probably Mother who gave him this information. Now I belong to Her. So the responsibility of my life is no longer mine, but Hers! "

" Within five minutes the merchant brought his wife. Four people carried her because her feet were not supporting her. I got an inspiration from within me and said 'Please climb up those steps.' Everyone was shocked. One of them said 'What do you mean? Four of us carried her to this place. And you are asking her to climb the stairs?' I instructed 'Do not speak. This is God's instruction.' She swiftly climbed the stairs, then sat and stood up. Every one was astonished. That merchant was so happy that he arranged all the provisions for us. We had nothing. But see how the divine force unobtrusively works! I am telling you what actually happened. I called one of the devotees (Santakka), gave her the provisions and told her to prepare some coffee. "

" From that moment onwards, I am not in my control. I am under Her control. She tells me what message to convey to anyone who comes near me. This is my life. "
