Where words retreated ( YATHO VACHO NIVARTHANTHE )

17.12.2000, Guntur Ashram :

Nanna spoke about the various aspects of dhyana for ten days. Some devotees from Rama's temple in Pandaripuram came daily to listen to his lectures on Sri Radha dhyana yoga.

" Dhyana yoga is that sadhana which is the peak level to reach God. Krishna said 'Dhyanena aathmaani pasyanthi'. If you want to come face to face with Bhagwan(God), only dhyana yoga will help you and nothing else. All other sadhanas are smaller ones. "

" 'Yadbhavo tadbhavathi'. You will become that object on which you contemplate the most. If you think of worldly objects, you will get small results. You should not follow Prakuthi. Prakruthi has five faces, five forms - sound, touch, sights, smell and taste. These are also known as the five elements. Again, the five elements or maya or nature are one and same. So, all sounds are related to nature. Any sadhana which involves name and form is certainly associated with nature. This must be avoided. The Maharshis stated that formless bhajan is the highest! This is silence! One who adopts silence is a muniswara. Atri and Jamadagni are considered to be great sages -muniswaras. Our mind was like a clean state. Some thoughts formed impressions on the mind. That's why we must live a life without being associated with name and form. Your job, your family, your interaction with other people - all are associated with name and form. You must follow the sadhana which has no form and name. That is the difficulty! Silence, without name and form is the only way. If you have written some matter on the state but feel it is not right, you will wipe it off. Your mind has thoughts, aspirations and desires. If you wipe them off, you will attain the bhava which is free from name and form. You must lead such a life that you should not think of anything pertaining to nature. First point - avoid nature. There is no prakruithi without name and form. You must be in bhava without name and form. Only the Maharshis could do this extra ordinary feat! "

" Bharadwaja and Saubhari showed extraordinary and divine powers. They surrendered to Prakruthi. Brahma lusted after his own daughter! That is a great danger with prakruthi. That's why you must avoid this. We must wipe off what is written on the state. When the mind is clean, we can easily move up. "

'Nanna, that means in dhyana we must first keep the mind clean; this is more essential than thinking of someone (deity)..

" It is not the question of clean. Clean means blank. You must create the thoughtless mind. Thoughtless mind gets extraordinary powers. That power is linked with the Divine. You can easily move few steps towards Divine. Dhyana is the only method to develop a link with the Divine. Only dhyana! Practice dhyana yoga. The first principle is silence. "

'Nanna, how can we create thoughtless mind? We face some problem or other all the time.'

Nanna laughed.

" That is the difficulty in dhyana. It is very difficult to hold God. 'Yatho vacho nivarthanthe aprapya manasa saha' - neither your voice nor your mind can hold of God. The Vedas clearly stated that you can catch hold of anybody except God. He is beyond the reach of mind or voice - 'Avagmanasagochraha'. We have only mind and voice. So the only power which is not associated with mind and words is the power of silence. We must adopt this silence. Gradually develop the thoughtless mind. It is not possible to describe the powers of thoughtless mind. Silence has immense powers. Be immersed in Mother's work. When you are in silence, thoughtless---------- "

'Awareness: Nanna.'

" That is the only way. Awareness is thoughtlessness. Thoughtless mind and awareness are one and the same. Mere way of the presence of divine Mother! Mother is near me. She is the formless embodiment of Divinity! Though, She is formless, She is seeing me. I will tell you who Radha is and how powerful She is! I will not quote from scriptures; this is a true, real life incident. I am the witness! One month back, I was sitting in this same room, writing a book on Mother. It was very hot. Suddenly a stranger entered the room. 'You are sweating profusely. Why don't you write the book tomorrow?' 'No. I must complete the book before day break.' At that time, I felt a shaking, a vibration in my body. That night, the stranger converted this room to Air conditioning. "

" Now the question is - I don't know that man. At whose suggestion did he spend thousands of rupees on the spot to provide me such comfort and convenience? There is nobody ... he never knew me. We are strangers. Does he have so much excess money? Who is there? Invisible Mother! Mother, though invisible, has got very powerful thoughts. One thought will convert the man. What does it mean? "

" The Muniswara never spoke to anyone; they do not share their experiences. They are silent; perfectly silent! When Lord Narayana did penance, he became Badri Narayana. Who is his deity in dhyana? The Supreme Sovereign Mother! The second rule in dhyana - only two must be present, you and your deity. There is no room for a third entity. Rama Devi, Vishnu's consort always resides in his heart. When he decided to do dhyana, he asked her to leave. She became berry shrubs, spread all around him and served her husband. That is dhyana! "

" Blessing is not a physical activity. The Divine sends a thought. That thought will do so many things. When you bow to Mother, She will give the thoughts and things will happen successfully....She gave the thought to the stranger and this room became A.C. by night. If you have complete faith in Mother, if you intensely contemplate on Her, you will certainly become a member of Her family. "

'Nanna, should we remain thoughtless or should we think of Mother?'

" Anything with name and form pertains to prakruthi. When there is even a trace of prakruthi, you are bound to fall. We are contemplating on prakruthi. We came down as small jeevas. We are absolutely powerless. You cannot even say what is present behind this wall. You can't tell what will happen tomorrow. This is because you are purely jeevas. Why did we come to this state? Due to contemplation on prakruthi! If we do the same again now, we don't know whether we will get a human birth in our next birth. Even that life will be transient. When the worldly body perishes, we will weep. This is the foremost hurdle in dhyana. "

" The bullock moves around the pivot continuously to remove oil from the seeds. It traces the same path for years together. If you ask the bullock whether it saw the tree in the yard, it will reply that it never moved from out its circle. We are also like that. We are moving within prakruthi. There is no chance to go outside. This nature will reduce you to a small figure. You will be entangled in small things. Dareshana, Dhaneshana and putreshana - desire for wealth, power, family are small things. If you think only of these things, you will fall down again. You will become weak, tiny and small. That is why you must not think of small things. "

" The third principle - 'Antarmukha samaradhyayai namaha bahirmukha sudurlabhaha'. We are seeing the world with outward vision. When we see the forms, names and sounds of prakruthi, we are gaining pleasure and becoming more and involved with nature. You became a slave to prakruthi. Science advised you to go inwards. The muniswaras close their eyes and see inwards. They never look outwards. When Brahma was born, he had a question 'Who is my father? Where is my loka?' He roamed around the whole globe but could not find his father. Finally he heard a voice from the sky 'Tapa, Tapa.' He went inwards in penance and saw his father. This is what the Bhagawata teaches us. "

" So, wherever you go, whatever you do, whether you are sitting or standing, you must always think that 'I am not alone. I am with Mother. The Divine Mother is also with me. She has no form. But She is hearing me, following me, seeing me.' Why do you need a body? If I don't have a body, can't I see? Divine Mother is like that! God is here, seeing me. That's why I don't care. "

" The first point is silence. Silence means weeping. You must wipe off the thoughts on the slate. Then silence follows! If you wipe off all impressions from your mind, you will become a Mahamuni. Associate yourself with Mother at all times and all places. "

Nanna explained the three principles of Dhyana Yoga - Silence, thoughtlessness and inwardness. He stressed the need to go beyond prakruthi associated with name and form and do dhyana on the all pervading Supreme Mother. He included himself with us despite being the personification of dhyana, saying we are absolutely powerless. At the same time, he also said 'can't I see if I don't have a body?' indicating that he possesses the power to see everything even without the physical body.

" You can see Mother here. The fact is that Mother is here. She is seeing you. She is everywhere. You must develop that feeling, the feeling without form.... "

" All objects in nature are small; Man saw these tiny objects and was drawn towards them. Yadbhavo tadbhavathi.' When you are associated with any object excessively, you will attain the form of that object. This is the secret of creation. When this jeeva was still in the athma (soul) state, he looked towards the world. He became attracted towards the small objects here. His original attraction was towards Mother. This attraction towards the world came in between and diverted his attention away from Her. As soon as he moved towards the world, maya pulled him further. His original nature which was moving towards God turned towards the world and fell down. He developed love and affection towards worldly objects. He was lured by them and drifted towards that side. This is generally what happens to everybody. "

" Bilwamangala was a great devotee of Panduranga. He used to do dhyana every morning, serve his parents, treat his wife with respect and look after the house hold responsibility. He used to read the Ramayana daily and tried to lead his life according to the dharma. He was a true devotee. One day his friend took him near a prostitute to listen to her singing verses from Bhagwata. He resisted on that day. The next day his friend came back to him and forced him to accompany. He yielded and went to her house. Chintamani, the prostitute was a good singer. She sang and danced well. Her performances attracted the jeeva. His original nature of yearning for Divine turned downwards, towards her. In this way his friend took him continuously for five days. She would sit on a chair and sing while he attentively listened. Slowly his upward journey descended and he fell. By associating with her, he developed a multi sense appeal. All his senses became attentive towards her songs, dance and actions. Finally, he began to go there without his friend. His nature, which was inwards and upwards turned downwards and outwards. "

" We must move in the right direction. That is why I am explaining the actual position. Originally, man was moving upwards and inwards towards God. By association with the prostitute, inwardness became outwardness. His ascent towards God became descent towards the world. Everything is in opposite direction! He became so attracted to her that he stopped going home. Though his father was ill, he did not care for him. He did not serve his parents any longer. This is his downwards and outwards journey towards the world. Our lives are also like this. Though we talk of Bilwamangala, it is the story of every human being. We are lured by some object or other. Inwardness became outwardness; upward travel turned downwards. "

Nanna discussed some points from his book - Divine wisdom.

" Man's real nature is deep yearning for God. Every human being original nature is deep yearning, intense yearning. This yearning was shown by Chaitanya and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Sometimes, I am also in that state of yearning. The original nature comes out in you. That yearning turned towards the world. As we saw many objects, they framed impressions on the mind in the form of thoughts. Our consciousness which was like a clean slate became filled with thoughts. "

" Bilwamangala's father begged him to stay back as he was very ill. Suddenly, there was a big thunder. He rushed back to her saying that she is scared of thunder; he must go back to giver her confidence and support. He told his wife to look after his father. When he reached her house, she welcomed him with open arms. That is the level to which he fell! His father died; his wife was all alone. She carried the body on her shoulder to the cremation ground and performed the last rites. Unable to live all alone, she jumped into the river and ended her life. Her body was floating on the water. Bilwamangala spent some time near Chintamani and went back to see his father. He had to cross the river to go to his house. He thought that his wife's corpse was a log and stood on it to reach the other bank. When he reached the house, he did not find anybody. His mind began to pull him back towards her, so he went back. This is his life. Finally, only when he received God's call, his outwardness became inwardness. The flow towards the world flowed back towards God, by his grace only. Then he became a Mahatma in his last days. When he died, his Samadhi was erected in Brindavan. "

Nanna clearly explained how the athma which was associated with divine yearned for worldly objects and fell. Through Bilwamangala's story he told us how much multi sense appeal can destroy man. He includes himself when he fells that story is the life of every human being. Well, where is Nanna! Where are we? By his grace, we are fortunate to be associated with him. Just as Bilwamangala who fell to such a level was uplifted by God's grace and gained a place in Brindavan; every human being must yearn for the Divine!

" Man's real nature is deep yearning for God or the nameless reality. This is revealed in the state of mouna or effortless awareness which is Brahmacharya of the senses. "

" We erase the writings from paper and bring it back to a blank, clean state. This erasing is known as silence. When you wipe the slate clean, it is silence because there are no thoughts anymore. A thoughtless mind has silence. In that state of silence, he attains inwardness. 'Antharmukha samradhyayai namaha' -true worship is inward worship. In this inwardness, he moves upwards. As he moves upwards, he gets wonderful experiences. Today, a lady narrated her experiences. That is known as yearning. The Gopikas wept for Krishna when he left them. This lady also wept like that. When she came to see me, I told her 'Very Good. By your sadhana you reached the third step - yearning.' As the yearning becomes deeper and more intense, you will reach the fourth stage - Divine grace. When jeeva weeps and approaches God, his heart will melt and he will shower his grace. By divine grace, man will attain knowledge. Now, we are ignorant. Our ignorance lies in the fact that we forgot our original nature. We think as ourselves what we really are not! This body is not the real we! The body has some name, but not the soul, not the consciousness and identifies with the physical body. We must all travel backwards. But our mind is filled with unnecessary thoughts. We need to erase them first. This process of erasing unwanted thoughts is silence. We must take the vow of silence. We must become thoughtless. This is possible only in silence. In this state of silence, we must slowly begin our inward journey. "

" Silence and inward journey - without them, man cannot regain his original state. Silence is difficult. You must swim against the tide; it is not easy. But gradually, man will gain his original state. Then he will feel yearning. With yearning, he will start weeping. 'It is so long that I moved in this path. I moved away from my goal and got involved in unnecessary bonds. Dareshana, dhaneshanam putreshana - all are new to me. I never had them originally.' "

" Before Sankaracharya went into Samadhi, he gave a message to all Indians through this verse: "

Mata nasti pita nasti nasti bandhu sahodaraha ; Artham nasti gruham nasti tasmat jagrata jagrata

" Who is your Mother? As long as you have this body you have a mother. Without this body, who is your mother? Your father is here only as long as you have the body. Otherwise, who is your father? He also leaves his body. When this body is not permanently yours, then who is your mother, father, brother, sister, relative? You amassed so much wealth in this world. But when you die, you don't take anything with you. You have no right over any money. "

" The Bhagawad Gita, Sankaracharya and other great sages remind us of our original nature. 'Sarvadharman parityajya mamekam saranam vraja.' Oh Lord, you preach us about dharma. When you have no body, where is the dharma? All dharmas vanish when the body perishes. You have no home, no family and no money. You have nothing... "

" We must travel back in this way. We lost our way and traveled along the wrong path. We must now go back to the right path. That is dhyana. "

" There are many kinds of dhyana. What must we follow? What should we do? Each one follows some path. You get that form about which you think the most. In Bhagawata, we read about Jada Bharatha who thought only about a little deer and became a deer in his next birth. Prakruthi is almost Maya. We must never take shelter in Maya. If you go to a thief for help, he will advise you to steal. Similarly, if you trust nature, you will fall. Don't follow nature, you are actually associated yourself with form and sound. You must not think of anything related to nature. It will give you only small results - small powers of Maya or little jobs. Hence, this must be avoided. 'I want Mother, the all pervading Mother. She is here now. She is seeing me. Though I cannot see Her, She is seeing me. I am always in Her sight, in Her protection.' Do dhyana with such a bhava. None other than Mother! Radhaji is beyond mind and words. You can hold Her only by bhava. She is Bhavaswroopini (embodiment of bhava). Let us do dhyana. "

Nanna exemplified how one reaches the yearning state by doing dhyana with thoughtless mind, how God's grace showers when yearning becomes deep, how knowledge is awakened by Divine grace. Every word spoken by him is what he practices. That is why his words directly touch the heart. His style of teaching, his examples are simple yet direct! He never tries to offend anybody. He includes himself whenever he cautions us to do or not to do something. Can we ever repay him? He never expects anything from us. Infact, he feels as if we are doing him a favor when we do dhyana!

Nanna, bless us so that we can move in the path taught by you and reach you.
