Satsang (Divine Company)

Nanna often quoted from the Vedas in his lectures. 'Satyam tapas, mounam tapas'. (Truth is penance; silence is penance). Truth is the personification of God; silence is the spiritual sadhana accepted by spiritual sadhakas all over the world. Silence is universal spirituality. Sri Radhika Prasad, who we lovingly know as Nanna is a Rasayogi. He does not belong to any caste or religion. The Mahatma who declared that 'all paths are within me' gave guidance to every spiritual aspirant yearning for God through his life and teachings. He clarified that truth is God and that truth is not restricted to any particular religion. He stressed that satsang (gathering of spiritual sadhakas) is very helpful in the spiritual journey of man.

The previous volumes of this book contain the conversations and lectures of Nanna on various topics related to Radhaji. This volume reproduces an article written by Nanna on Satsang. His teachings are an amalgamation of science and his experiences. Hence they can be understood and followed by anybody from any culture or religion. Anyone with true devotion and yearning can depend on his teachings and successfully continue his sadhana. Nanna, the manifestation of the all pervading Radha is the essence of all sadhanas. The sadhaka who follows Nanna will realize the depth on this path of truth.

In the book Divine Wisdom, Nanna said 'Silence does not mean giving up your activities. It is controlling the mental which are fragmented and disorganized and directing them towards our goal. Satsang can take place only where silence prevails.

The article on Satsang written by Nanna is reproduced below:

" 1. All men under the Sun may or may not agree about God or any other subject but fully agree in their realization of truth, in their adoration of truth. The Vedic declaration from Rig Veda is 'Ekam sat viprah bahudha vadanthi'. Satsang means communion and association with sat. "

" 2. Generally, the term satsang is used to mean congregation of devotees which spend some time in devotional exercises or bhajans. But the real meaning of satsang is exactly opposite of this congregational exercise. It means divine communion with Sat and no such communion is possible if there is even the least distraction in our vision of the objects in quest, namely sat. Not only external forms, sounds and feelings but even the many thoughts and waves of earthly emotions that emanate from our ego - consciousness are considered as positive disturbances to our satsang. Satsang is carried out in the divine temple of Silence. Can the holy region of science which is above and beyond all lower states of diversity and attraction "

" Thus satsang means communion in silence. (the individual finite self or ego which is bundle of unfulfilled desires, cravings and earthly attachments.) "

" 3. Any effort leads to small strain, fatigue or exhaustion and replete him of energy in some degree or other. Effort implies resistance to some opposite pull or opposing forces and leads to loss of energy and fatigue. When we take to japa, or worship, a communication, speech making, speech listening or reading books also, we are putting forth some efforts and losing energy. That is why God in his bounty and mercy has provided in his cosmic plan for compulsory repose and replenishment of energy by bringing the jeeva into contact, without their effort into the vicinity of this temple of silence, known as sushupti, in which the jeeva gets the necessary repose and replenishment of energy in the most mystic manner. All sadhanas where the body, mind and senses are voluntarily brought into play; all sadhanas where the ego with its sense of identity with its body, mind and senses functions, - lead to strain, small fatigue and loss of energy. Satsang has to be carried out only in the temple of silence- bodily and mental silence - effortless awareness. "

" 4. Satsang is not done by any other sadhana and spiritual exercise for there is no effort. In satsang there is only effortless self awareness- desire less, thoughtless state of awareness. There is no strain, no fatigue and no loss of energy. The 'I' remains in its most natural state- the naked state of pure consciousness - free from all mental activity or mental efforts. "

" 5. Satsang is the most natural sadhana in the whole universe for it keeps the 'I' in its own naked state free from distractions caused by thoughts. Satsang is direct death of the ego for the ego does not exist where there is no thought. "

" 6. Nature is imposing this sadhana of silence on every individual so that he regains the energy lost through the day. "

" 7. Now the question arises 'how can you maintain silence without self effort?' In all sadhanas, self effort functions almost throughout the period of practice everyday. But in satsang, self effort is affected for a short while and stops the moment silence is tasted by the 'I'. The fire produced from camphor ball burns itself along with the ball. "

" 8. Temple of silence is the fountain source of all cosmic powers, lights etc. It can easily put out the fire of self effort and show its divine light. "

" 9. Sri Dakshinamurthy, the great divine incarnation taught just this mystic secret of satsang- in the language of silence to his disciples -Sanaka, Sananda, Sanathana. The guru said 'I have taught everything to them' and they said 'we learnt everything' "

The process of maintaining Satsang

" For a rapid and successful progress in satsang, the following points must be borne in mind at all times: "

" 1) The pressure of ego is reduced considerably by remembering that the following two points are responsible for our present state of misery: "

" . Non equation of yourself with the spirit "

" . Mis-equation of yourself with the body "

" 2) Everything in this world including our own body is fleeting in its nature and subject to the law of birth, growth and decay and death. Knowing that any object or state or circumstance is rapidly changing- we must maintain mental equanimity always and not be affected by any changes in the object or state accordingly "

" 3) Remain in the state of silence whenever it is possible throughout the day or even for a few minutes. "

" 4) Thoughts, feelings etc arising from the state of silence should not be cooperated with, for they will die soon. "

" 5) Life in the temple of silence slowly reveals to us on own natural infinite mind. "

" 6) It is from our waking consciousness alone that we should wake up into self consciousness. As much as in waking state, we must get into the habit of living in the temple of silence whenever opportunity arises, even for a few minutes. "

" 7) The acid test of progress is that our sadhana becomes very tasty to us. Natural joy arises in us effortlessly and we are tempted to get into the holy shrine of silence as often as we can - perhaps 20-30 times a day, for the region of silence is the function source of all joy. "

In this article, Nanna made it clear that satsang does not mean a gathering where worship and bhava is conducted; it is being associated with sat. He also told what one must do continuously maintain satsang. He handed us the taste of satsang which continuously takes place in the temple of silence without our conscious effort.

On 4.1.02, Nanna practically demonstrated in Guntur ashram what he preached about satsang. 'Remain in silence. Mother will come,' 'I am in mouna dhyana. Mother came.' Thus he showed us what satsang means. That lecture which flowed in a stream of Sri Radha dhyana aptly forms the continuation of Nanna's article.

" Mouna deeksha (vow of silence) is accepted by Vedas. The Vedas say Satyam tapas, mounam tapa. Mouna deeksha is very powerful. One time Vivekananda went to Jeruselam. He met a scholar and asked about Jesus Christ's sadhana. He replied that Christ's sadhana comprised of three steps only - Go into your room; Close the door behind you; Pray in secret. That is dhyana yoga. It is a very secret yoga. Continuously remaining in Mother's thoughts! She and Her sakhis are all pervading. They are present in every nook and corner of the world. They can do any and every thing. "

" Mahatmas do everything in silence. Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa remained in silence. I also maintain silence. It is given a lot of importance. By silence, unknown to you, the spots on the mind will fade. When your worldly concerns and thoughts become intense, a cataract spot is formed on the mind. Nobody is aware of this. This spot is visible to yogis only. I have seen them. Many spots are formed over many lives. That's why we moved away from God. We are unable to see God. We became like blind people with eyes, deaf people with ears. Man is becoming a fool though he has a mind. Mother told us to take care of this. "

" Don't keep anything in your mind. Don't have any thoughts. Silence is the greatest deeksha. Silence only is Mother's form. In your mouna deeksha, think 'Mother this silence is Your form.' Remain in silence for a few hours. Feel the silence as the voice of Mother. Silence is not vacuum; it is the dynamic voice of Divine Mother. All great mahatmas accepted silence. You also must practice such silence. Mother will come now. When She comes, many leelas will take place. My religion is not vacuum; it is Mother's religion. When you practice silence with this bhava, She will come..Many times, without my knowledge, Mother is seen in the higher worlds. I thought it was something else. Later I realized it is the higher world where everybody goes after death. We can see that world. "

" It is good to be in silence for at least 10 hours everyday. Don't act. Mouna deeksha is not an action. Remain in the state of silence. That's all. Don't act. Enter the temple of silence. Mother will come to that temple. You will not know how She entered. Be in Her presence, in silence. You and Your Mother remain in the temple of silence. Gradually, She will show you. "

" I wrote many articles on silence. Silence is Mother's voice; enter into silence, feel Mother's presence and then..In silence..Mother came. "

" Yogam means union. Rajayoga and karmayoga means the union given by God according to karma. When we are in silence, we can feel Mother's movement. Silence is the meeting place with Mother. Begin silence with that bhava. Slowly, newer ideas will develop. In silence, I was separated from this body. I was seeing this body objectively, not subjectively. When you feel this body is yours, it is subjective. Give up that thought. Silence will change the subjective body into an objective one. You must proceed step by step in this way. "

Thus Nanna taught us how to meet Radhaji in the temple of silence while he did dhyana in silence!
