ADORNING THE MIND
14.09.2002, Brindavan

The day after Radhashtami celebrations, we all surrounded our loving Nanna, the attribute of Sri Radha's love and sweetness, who was glowing with that bliss. We forgot every else in the Radhasakhi's divine presence.

" Sri Krishna always worships Sri Radha. She is the embodiment of Hladini Sakthi. She suppressed the pride of Madana (Lord Manmatha) in Maharasa and made Krishna as Madana Mohana. Krishna said, 'Radha, if I am Madana Mohana, you are Madana Mohana Mohini'. We must always meditate on that Mother, overcome all obstacles in our way and adorn our mind with the divine principles granted by Her. "

Nanna then narrated the Madana Mohana Mohini Leela.

" This Leela depicts that Mother alone possesses the power to suppress anger and desires in this world. This leela is enacted in plays. The play has four scenes "

" This Leela depicts that Mother alone possesses the power to suppress anger and desires in this world. This leela is enacted in plays. The play has four scenes "

" Scene -1 : Manmatha appears with his friends and tells them 'I instilled desire in Brahma; he succumbed and fell. I instilled desire in Vishwamitra; he too succumbed and fell. I was responsible for Saubhari Maharshi's downfall. Now I want to ascend to the next step. I must make Krishna succumb to desire. Then nobody will follow him. Let us go near Krishna' "

" Scene-2 : Krishna is sitting with his friends. Manmatha went near them. When Krishna acknowledged his arrival, he says, 'Krishna, I did not come here casually to meet you. I came here to fight you, defeat you and prove that I can make you also succumb to desire. Everybody lost control due to this desire. When you also do the same, I will become the Emperor on earth. That's the purpose of my visit'. Krishna responded, 'Very happy! You may fight me. If you wait for 3-4 days, Maharasa will be celebrated here. Innumerable gopikas will participate in this function and flock around me. They are all in their prime youth; if you can evoke any response in any one of them, if you make even one of them succumb to desire, then I will accept defeat and bow before you'. Thinking that this is a good chance, Manmatha agreed and left. "

" Scene -3 : Krishna is alone, thinking aloud, 'I said that I would surrender to him if he is able to evoke desire in at least one gopika. Even such great Maharshis lost before him. Among so many gopikas ...even if one gopika feels kama (material attraction), I will become his slave for life!' Then he thought of Radhaji and Her Hladini sakthi. He knew that if he sought shelter in Her Hladini Sakthi, his problem would be solved. He began penance for Her. She appeared and said, 'Krishna, why did you call me. What is your problem?' Krishna explained the situation and prayed for Her protection. She agreed and left. "

" Scene -4 : The day of Maharasa. As mentioned in Bhagawata, so many gopikas participate in the Rasa and surround Krishna. Manmatha appeared at that time with 5 arrows. One smitten with desire has 5 faces; hence the 5 arrows. If he shoots these 5 arrows, nobody can escape; they must succumb to them. That is the power of the arrows. The arrows will not rest until the person they are aimed at accepts defeat. When Manmatha released these arrows from his bow, Krishna silently prayed 'Radhaji, Radha, You must protect me. He has shot 5 arrows; how many Gopikas are likely to be affected!' Then Mother raised Her hand in assurance and protection (Abhayam). She released the wave of Her Hladini Sakthi. Due to its effect Manmatha himself felt desire for Krishna. The Gopikas did not have any desire, it was Manmatha who felt desire! He realized his folly and prostrated at Krishna's feet. Since then Krishna's name changed to Madana Mohana. "

" Madana desired Mohana; hence Madana Mohana. Such a great name! Krishna came directly to Radha and said, ' I have won. I became Madana Mohana. If I am Madana Mohana, you are Madana Mohana Mohini' and changed Her name too! Since then Krishna is Madana Mohana and Radha is Madana Mohana Mohini. "

" That Radha endowed with Hladini Sakthi is the Goddess of our worship. We are meditating on Her. Even if anger and desire during dhyana yoga, do not fear because Mother is there to protect you. If you are in Mother's thought, they have no effect on you. They will be automatically suppressed. All the rishis are meditating on Mother too. Due to this meditation on Her, anger and desire are not a cause for concern! If you must succeed in your sadhana, Mother's 'Chintana' is a must. It is essential that Mother must be the nucleus of our thoughts, our concentration our sadhana, our destination! In the spiritual kingdom, there is no greater destination than our Mother! "

" Body Conscious is the first obstacle in our spiritual path. As long as you think that you are this body, Rajoguna - anger and desire will surface in you. The more you forget the body, the farther you will move away from anger and desire. Note this point. Dehatma bhava is very harmful. Due to the bhava that 'Aham dehasmi' (I am this body), the rajoguna in your body will be fuelled and anger and desire will appear. Then man topples. In this way, many rishis forfeited their balance; prominent among them are Vishwamithra, Saubhari, Brahma and even Shiva. All of them fell only because of Rajoguna associated with the body. They had a bad fall because they did not have Mother's chintana. We are very fortunate because we have intense chintana of Mother. Due to this, we always have the protection of Mother's Hladini Sakthi. As long as we have this protection, anger and desire cannot harm us. "

" The second obstacle is affinity between man and woman. This affinity is found everywhere in this creation. Man desires a woman; woman desires a man. This affinity is found in man, gods, rishis, animals, birds, insects and even trees and flowers. "

" When a man begins dhyana, a woman comes in his way. When a woman appears in the middle of his dhyana, he is shaken and falls. When a woman begins dhyana, a man comes before her. She desires him and faces downfall. At one time, there was a great person, Radha Baba. He is not alive now. In his autobiography, he mentions why he took sanyas. One lady, a widow desired another man. Her son resented this and obstructed her. She gave poison and killed her own son so that she could freely live with her lover. Radha Baba witnessed this incident and thought, 'this is how the world is! Why should I live in this worthless world?' and accepted sanyas. This is Radha Baba's experience! "

" This intimacy and attraction exists in the Gods, man, animals, birds, insects and trees. This is a very big obstacle. When a man meditates, a woman appears and when a woman meditates a man appears. Then their downfall is inevitable. When he thinks 'I am this body', the body related rajoguna awakens and he is prone to anger and desire. That is his downfall. So 'Aham dehaasmi' is the first obstacle and 'the intimacy between man and woman' is the second obstacle. Even great people fell due to these obstacles. "

" All the sins are caused by the external form. All desires arise due to external form. It is only due to this external sight that man is faced with different problems and sins. In penance, one must travel inwards. Moving externally is not advisable. In the external journey, the whole world is visible. All the base (lower) traits in the world are visible. Note down the principle stated in the scriptures: 'Antarmukha samaradhyayai namaha bahirmukha sudurlabhaha'. Lord Brahma searched for his father everywhere but could not find him. Then he heard a voice 'Tapa! Tapa!'. He was told to do penance. Only after penance, he found his father. Note down this point under the heading 'Bahirmukham'. Due to Brahma's experience, we came to know that penance is more important than human effort. You can't achieve anything due to human effort alone. Penance is also required. When he realized this, Brahma stopped his travel to all the worlds and began penance. Tapasya means inward travel. So the third obstacle is the external travel. "

" The fourth obstacle - man cannot move upwards as long as the life is different and sadhana is different. One who makes his life as his sadhana will certainly move upwards. This is a very important point. He should not allot some part of his life for sadhana, his entire life should be his sadhana. He who achieves this is a Mahatma. "

" Man, who existed as the representation of the soul at one time, became excessively attached to the worldly objects. As a result of the negative effect due to this attachment, he became 'nature'. He succumbed to the nature, faced downfall and became unworthy and incompetent. His downfall took place only due to association with nature. He became an ordinary human being. Man, who represented the soul now became an ordinary human being. The only reason for this state is his connection with the world. "

" Sounds of nature! What are these sounds of nature? The five senses, ie, sound, touch, sight, taste and smell represent nature. The sounds that are associated with nature are found in 'mantra'. The mantra was formed from a few sounds. Thought of that mantra means thought of sound. Sound is related to nature. That means even thoughts of every mantra are linked with the thought of nature. When he thinks of nature, the attributes of nature will influence him. He is faced with all those problems that can happen due to nature. The extremely powerful soul became a weak, ordinary human being "

'Nanna, then should we not take Mother's mantra?' Rishigaru asked.

" Unless one poseess Bhava, nobody can go there. He does not have permission even to enter Her kingdom. Bhava is essential. In this spiritual journey, the first plane (lower plane) is the worldly body associated with the five senses of nature. Above that is the Chinmaya and even above that is the bhava deha. The lower two bodies will gradually disappear and he will enter into bhava deha. Then only he will attain bhava. Until then, he cannot obtain Her darshan. Vivekananda said: 'God lives in Bhava loka, without possessing bhava nobody can go to that loka'. "

" Even if you write 'Rama Rama Rama... a number of times with a piece of coal, it will not change. The coal must change to fire. Unless it comes into contact with fire, the coal will never change to fire. How does fire come out from the coal? Name transforms into bhava. The name does not stay till the end. The name will disappear and bhava appears. This will happen as we move upwards. This is the trait of nature. As you watch, Mother's name will be transformed into bhava. Gradually the raw fruit will ripen. Similarly, name changes into bhava. "

This is Nanna's reply to Rishigaru's query about Mother's mantra. He did not give a direct reply but said 'Unless one possesses bhava, nobody can go there'.

Man, who is like the charcoal can repeat the mantra which is linked to this world any number of times, yet he will not attain bhava. Unless he attains bhava, he cannot gain entry into the kingdom of Bhava. The letters 'Radha' originated from Krishna's worship (Aradhana). Hence, they are beyond this Prakriti. They represent 'Para'. Though they appear as name, in reality they are not a name. Hence in incessant dhyana, the name is converted into bhava. When we attain bhava, we can enter Mother's kingdom.

" The worldly pressures that we find most important when we are connected with nature will appear at the time of death. No man can escape from this. He is so engrossed in that pleasure that he becomes obsessed with it. He gets that form in the next birth. That is how man falls. One must be very careful in his thoughts and yearning. He must think only about Mother at such times. He will not face downfall. "

" Mother is 'Mahabhava Swaroopini' - the embodiment of Mahabhava. This is stated in the Holy Scriptures. Man should not possess many thoughts and many qualities, just one thought! Just one goal! Otherwise, man can never reach God! Hence Krishna said 'Sarva dharman Parityajya.' - give up the 'many', 'Mamekam Saranam Vraja' - Seek shelter in me alone. Give up everything, all other dharmas and concentrate your thoughts only on me. So here Krishna stressed on 'one pointedness'. If man does not worship with this thought of singular, he is doomed. He has no choice. He must give up everything. Transcendental dharma is his surrender. Remember that there are many worldly dharmas, give up all of them. We need only the transcendental dharma. This is precisely why Krishna said 'Sarvadharman Parityajya Mamekam Saranam Vraja'. "

" Mother Herself granted us four principles. I shall talk about them tomorrow. "

" If you want to reach Mother, if you want to please Her, if you want to adorn Her, you must decorate your mind first. You must first learn to adorn your mind. If you keep your mind in this way, it means that you have adorned Mother; She will certainly come. I realized this fact gradually. We must write, read and preach about Mother's life. You must write the books; print them and again read them. You must clearly explain the content of these books. This is one of the ways of pleasing Mother. Secondly, Mother's 'Janmotsav'. She told us the meaning of this birth festival (Utsav) 'Ut' means God; 'sava' means appearing before you. 'Utsava' means literally, God's appearance. This must be highlighted. In earlier times, such terms used to be mentioned in religious literature. 'Saptaha' - week long discourses used to cover every religious aspect in detail. Since it is related to God, it must be carefully explained. It is very difficult. One must cite a large number of examples. "

" So, what pleases Mother? We are planning to have a 'Jhoola (swing) utsava' on Mother's birthday; this is very good. You must have the bhava in your mind that Mother is a small girl. If you want to please Her, then you can have Jhoola Utsava. We shall have this ceremony along with pooja and lectures. We shall distribute packets containing sweets and savories to all the sadhus and to 30-40 houses in Ravali. Ravali is the place where Mother emerged on this earth. The people there are very innocent. Who will give them such savories? We must do that. Then Mother will be pleased. We must also arrange stay and food for all the devotees who come to participate in this function. It involves a lot of expenditure. Mother is watching us! She will be pleased that 'they are making arrangements for my festival, they are doing this seva without any irritation and they are providing happiness to so many people'. Madhavayya, the cook will be with us that day. "

" Seva is the greatest of all! Mother likes seva very much. One devotee, Narayana Bhattu in Barsana, used to clean all the steps of the hill with his turban - almost 400-500 steps! He would do this seva thinking 'Radhe Radhe' in his mind. He never asked anyone for anything. He was very sensitive by nature. He did everything only for Mother's pleasure. She saw this. One cold night, she dropped Her shawl from the sky and draped him. Seva is so great! "

" Krishna said in the Gita 'Sarva Dharman Parityajya mamekam saranam vraja' - Forget all other dharmas, but never forget me. The worldly dharmas are 'many', but transcendental dharma is only one! 'Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu...' - there are many such dharmas. Sankaracharya said 'Mata naasti pita naasti...' - Neither father nor Mother, nothing will come with you after death. All these bonds exist only as long as the body is present. When the body perishes, there is no family. So this seva towards your family is temporary and transient. Mother's seva is permanent. It is also very sensitive. Mother showed 4 or 5 types of seva. I will tell you how fond She is of seva! She actually performed and indicated the seva that She is fond of. We must do such seva. Note down if you want to. "

" Explaining the first seva, Nanna told about the Bengali Baba's story in Brindavan. "

" Mother came as a nine year old girl, enquired about his problem with a tender voice, tender heart and tender love; then solved his problem. This is 'Tatsukhena sukhitwam'. Same is the case of Narayana Bhattu! They thought only of Mother's pleasure. Mother took care of his happiness (comfort) and covered him with Her shawl. The Bengali Baba was a great devotee, that's why She provided him all comforts and fed him throughout his life. 'Tatsukhena sukhitwam' does not mean only how you must be with Mother, but also that you must be in the same way with other devotees. That's why when I give pieces of biscuits to the birds, they eat them with joy and also feed their children. We must be very happy to do this. We must not be harsh towards any living being. Don't reject any person; don't humiliate anyone; don't consider anyone as insignificant. There is no question of less or more! Living being and seva - that's all. There are several such examples to illustrate that seva bhava is very great. In fact it is greater than yagnas, japa or tapa! "

" You must decorate your mind, which means you must make your mind sensitive. If anyone needs your help, you must extend your services. If you can't do much, you must contribute at least a little but help them. You must work whole heartedly with affection. Greet the person affectionately. "

" The next is 'Ananya Nishta'. This is very great, totally Mother's. People are unable to understand this. 'Radha is my deity. All other Gods are useless' In this way, some people may express their love for their deity and hatred for other Gods. You don't get anything positive by this, in fact it is a sin! In Sivakanchi and Vishnu Kanchi, the devotees of Siva and Vishnu are fighting with each other. They are always criticizing the other God! During festivals, they harm and even kill each other. But this is not devotion! It is demonical! It is demon's devotion; not the right devotion. A true devotee would say, 'Sivaya Vishnu roopaya tava roopaya Vishnave', - All are one, God is one; many forms appeared from one God'. "

" Divine light shines in every God. From the same wheat flour, one can make different kinds of eatables. Whatever you make, the source is the same. In the same way, God is only one! His aura is filled in all the Gods. If you detest any God, Mother will not like it. She is very particular about this. So Ananya Nishta has so many hidden implications. This idea should not apply only to Mother but to the devotees also; you must serve the devotees of other God's also; it is your duty! "

" I worked as a teacher for three years in a Muslim school in Guntur. One night at 9 P.M. while I was reading, a little boy came near my house. I recognized him as Gaffoor studying in V standard. When I called him, he felt shy and refused to come. I again called him and gave him something to eat. The very next day, I started a 'Muslim Poor Fund'. I don't know if it is continuing now. This was almost 60 years ago. I started the Fund with Rs. 100. I contributed one tenth of my salary to the fund. The other teachers and my friends also made some contribution. These poor children need books and food. They should not be hated based on their religion. That's very wrong. Even today, when I go to Guntur, the Muslims surround me and respect me. Mother likes us to do such things. All this is a part of adorning our mind. "

" The first in decoration is 'Tatsukhena sukhitwam'; second is 'Ananya Nishta'. "

" Ananya Nishta means seeing your deity everywhere. Your deity is Radha. You must see Radha only in all other Gods. That is Ananya Nishta. See Mother everywhere. Don't hate any God; see only your deity throughout the world'. "

" The third is 'Nitya Sahachari Bhava'. This is the greatest of all! "

" Aravinda Yogi wrote a book wherein it is mentioned that Gandhari is the most famous in India as far as sahachari bhava is concerned. I have not seen such bhava as hers anywhere else so far, not even in the Gods. "

(Nanna told about Gandhari's wedding and how she blind folded her eyes ..)

" That's why Gandhari is great. We too must move along with Mother. We must gauge the bhava of Mother, and move behind Her with that companionship. This is not in the physical sense; we must attain that quality like Mother. That is real companionship. We must observe how Mother has helped others; we also must do the same. This quality is very important. "

" The next point is 'Sakara Nirakara samanvayam' - Mother is form as well as formless. How to meditate on the formless? We must see Mother even in little things, say small birds. Mother is pleased if you give those little birds some food. So you must see Mother in Her form as well as in Her formlessness! Practice dhyana on the formless. In the form, do seva to small birds or squirrels. You must develop this coordination of the form and formless. This pleases Her very much. "

" You can see that Mother finds divinity and love even in the smallest object. We must try to be like that. Our mind should not reject anything as small and insignificant. On a cloudy day, the little birds are trapped in their nest, weeping for food. The other day, it was raining heavily. I sent some food for the birds, I know where they are! We must struggle to help them, just as Mother does! "

" These are the four principles which please Mother. We must align our life according to these principles. Then Mother will be happy. Our life should be such that we are doing penance within us. Good life, good penance, good love and a good heart - all are essential. We must possess all of these. Mother likes them. "

" There are many ways to be engrossed in thoughts of God. Japa (recital of name) is one of them. Chintana in the mind; dhyana on the nameless and formless; dhyana on the form are a few others. The Bhagawad Gita discusses some ways and also mentions which is the highest! In the Gita, Krishna says, 'Yagyanam japayagyosmi' ; japa is one form of yagya. When you say 'Rama Rama Rama, Krishna Krishna Krishna', it is another form of yagya - Nama yagya. They are also good, but not enough to attain God. That is the greatest limitation. The step above this yagya is 'Chintana', Krishna said. 'Ananyaschintayantomam yejanaha paryupasate tesham nityabhi - yuktanam yogakshemam vahamyaham. If you have Ananya Chintana - single minded, focused meditation, it is very good. It is more effective than yagnya. Due to Ananya Chintana, you will come closer to me. I will move closer to you. When we move closer, I will look after your well being from time to time. "

While explaining the verse in Gita 'Ananya schintayanto mam..' Nanna said. 'Due to .... time to time', speaking about Krishna's assurance, suddenly Nanna put himself in Krishna's place and spoke.

" This is the greatness of Ananya Chintana. In this method, wherever you see, whatever you look at, you will see only your deity; none else. That's why Krishna likes Ananya Chintana so much. He in this state all the time; Pandavas are in this state; Draupadi is in this state! The Mahabharat cites an apt example to show how God looks after their welfare. "

Nanna narrated the incident where Krishna protected Draupadi.

" By your japa yagya, God does not look after your well being, but he will if you have Ananya Chintana. There is a third aspect which is more significant than these. We are concerned with that point. That is Dhyana! Krishna said 'Dhyanena atmani pasyante'. By Dhyana, you can have the darshan of the supreme God. He will appear before you only through dhyana; not by any other means. God also likes dhyana because it enables the devotee to seek God. Infact, that's why he passed on dhyana to us! "

" I told you that both form and formlessness exist. The form has limited powers. But, formless dhyana is unlimited and tremendously powerful. Steam is formed from water. Yet, the rail engine cannot move with water; only steam has that power! The steam which is formed from water has more power than water! In the same way, formless is more powerful than the form. You can assume that formless developed from the form, yet it is more powerful than form. So, we do not meditate on the form as it is not enough. I will tell you about meditation on the formless. Mother also preached about this only. The formlessness is like the steam. It is extremely powerful. Radhaji is the deity of this formless dhyana. Mother said 'I will appear near all my devotees. This formless dhyana is very great.' So, I must tell you only about formless dhyana. "

" You may wonder why you should not meditate on the form and how the meditation on formlessness is superior to the meditation on the form. Though both the means are related to God, why does the form not uplift us? Form means link with nature. So when we concentrate on the form which means on nature, we are sure to fall. Why----? One Maharshi, Jada Bharata, concentrated his thoughts on this nature in the form of a little deer. Whether in the form of a woman or a vegetable, thoughts of nature will bring you down. That's a big danger. He became attached to the little deer and looked after it dearly. He was even worried what would happen to the deer after his death. We all will face this situation one day-attachment to our child or spouse or parents. At the time of death, man is worried whether his daughter-in-law will take good care of his wife, how will his children manage without him? What will be their future? He dies in a weeping state. What does this mean? He concentrated his thoughts about his child; yearning for that child! So an impression is formed on his mind. Once an impression is formed, it is very difficult to erase it; his fall in inevitable. That impression will certainly pull him down. In this way man has taken birth several times; fallen down many more times. Innumerable impressions have been formed on the mind. When the eye has cataract, the vision is poor. With so many impressions God can't be seen. Man cannot ascend to the upper dham. We do not know what is beyond this world. We are ignorant and illiterate in this regard. Hence, it is all the more difficult for us to reach there. Don't ever become attached to the world, never. "

We are born so many times and have fallen so many times. Our loving and kind Nanna, regarding himself as one among us, is patiently and sensitively teaching us the way of Rasa.

" Yesterday I explained about the hurdles. All of them are related to the world. Only you are attached to the world, these hurdles will come in your way. If your encounter any one of them, you are sure to fall. That's why it is advised by the Rishis to avoid the world. Even Jesus Christ was not attached to the world. Beyond this world, it is 'Para'. This nature exists upto 'Para'. Nature is upto Brahma. Even Shiva is a part of nature. If you think excessively about any object in this world, an impression is formed and it will pull you down. Therefore, you must avoid nature and do dhyana. This is possible only by formless dhyana! If you bring in the form, you are linking with nature and your downfall. So you must adopt meditation on the formless. It is very significant. This is the starting point of our journey towards 'Para'. We shall not fall. We will not be affected by nature. The regular mantras are associated with sound-'Om, Hrim, Srim, Ramaya namaha.govindaya namaha...All the alphabets and words in the mantras are worldly names. Hence, when you take name which is associated with name, you will fall to some extent. May be not total downfall, but to some extent. Man cannot ascent to 'Para'; he cannot see God. God is not so easy to attain! Vivekananda said 'God lives in Bhavaloka'. So, God belongs to Bhava loka, not nature. One who thinks of nature will wander within the world. He will not move upwards; that's the difficulty. So, you must move beyond the ordinary mantras. "

" Now, even Mother is represented by sound, by name ----Radha. May be so, but after you move a little, Mother will take Her real form-bhavaroopa. Her formless roopa is known as bhava roopa. These ornaments, decorations-----belong to form. Though you start with the form, after a while, you will shift to the formless. I too started with the form. As I moved further and further, I came to formless. When you reach this state, you are filled with a sense of assurance and confidence that 'Mother is here. She is watching me. I am in Her sight. She will never leave me. I will not ask anyone for anything. She knows everything. She will give me what I need!' That is the greatness of formless dhyana. Mother showed me so many instances because I have such confidence in Her! I never ask anybody anything. I don't need to ask. Till date, I don't ask, not even Mother. Since I remain with the confidence that she knows what we need, I am getting everything. I am honestly saying that I don't ask anybody anything, not even Mother, nobody. "

Nanna became immersed in bhava.

Observe Nanna's talk carefully. While talking about dhyana, hurdles, adorning the mind, he told several times 'Note this point, write down this, sentence, also, note down if you want-----' By saying so,he emphasized that these points are important and must be understood and deep rooted in our hearts.

Dumbh kapat alasan ko chodo
Akalmash man se sakhi pad pakado
Sakhi dahrti mein rasakriti dharan
Saran karo nahi karat vicharan.
----

Give up boasting, deceit and laziness. Seek shelter at the Sakhi's feet with a pure and clear mind. Sakhi takes the form of rasa on earth. Surrender to Sakhi without any hesitation or thought.
