Nanna was seated in his room while we all gathered around him (Shri G.S.N. Murthy garu, his wife and few others) Nanna was glowing with the light of celebrating Sri Radha's crowning ceremony on Vasanthpanchami. Nanna spoke about the negative aspects which cause jeeva's downfall and positive aspects graced by Radhaji to uplift them.
|
"
What do you find common in a king, poor man and rich man? His sorrow! When he leaves the world, people cry for him. Why do you weep? He is going away from us; we cannot see him again; we cannot see that body anymore; we will miss his form; we will not hear his voice. He is leaving! Going somewhere! I cannot see him again in this birth. That is the reason for weeping.
"
|
"
The great sages saw deeper into this reason. The mahatmas pondered over this sorrow. Buddha is one among them. Why does man face so many problems and difficulties? You cannot find anybody who does not cry. There are two reasons for this sorrow. Every living being has a body - man, animal, we developed too much attachment for the body. We feel sad to leave the body. Once we give up the body, we will not get it back. Each one is unable to give up the attachment with the body because he will lose all the pleasures associated with it.
"
|
"
The truth is that everybody has to shed this body some day. Many kings many incarnations came and went. When Krishna left, many people jumped into the fire. When kamsa died, his wife burnt herself. The servant cries when his master dies. Why? This body is temporary; it must perish one day. We are linking ourself with it and deriving all pleasures. When the body no more exists, we are sad.
"
|
"
We must remember for what sorrow and pleasure we are living. Though the jeeva has divine grace and is blessed with powers of his penance; he must reduce his attachment towards materialistic objects and his physical body. This does not mean that you must give up your family. You may have a wife, children, wealth, house etc. That is not a problem at all. The problem arises when you feel 'I cannot live without them'. This is the basic difference between the sage and an ordinary man. God has given and you are enjoying the comforts. That's all. Don't develop attachments. All will leave you one day. All materialistic objects are short lived. Yet human being is in sorrow due to this attachment. Does permanent happiness exist? Where can we get it? Then can we get rid of this sorrow? That is what rishis, mahatmas and religious scriptures search for. These are the two fundamental questions in any philosophy. Each mahatma answers it in a different way.
"
|
"
Rama and Krishna took their incarnation for the welfare of mankind. They waged wars and killed the wicked demons. The Lord declared that he would destroy the evil ones and protect the good men. Now where will the soul of the killed one remain when their body is destroyed? The soul wanders here only in sorrow for their family, for wealth and pleasures. So the world has not been uplifted really! The sorrow still continues; in fact it has increased after death. Real upliftment of mankind would happen when the soul is happy after leaving the body. It must reach the beautiful divine higher world, where there is no sorrow at all!

"
I searched all scriptures. I spent all my life in spiritual philosophy. Finally, I found one point. I like what Buddha wrote about his experience during the night of nirvana. That experience changed my mind and my life to a great extent. I will tell you about that now.
"
|
"
Buddha was leaving everything and everybody behind and moving towards nirvana. He stopped eating for many days in pursuit of truth. He thought he would gain more control over his anger. On the other hand, his body became emaciated and bony; his anger increased. That was his state on the last night. 'What can I do? Why am I facing such problems? How can I overcome them?' He took his decision on that final important night.
"
|
"
Buddha was fast asleep, in a state of dreams. At 4 am, he had a vision of his wife carrying his son. 'You loved me and married me. I never disobeyed you anytime. Why did you leave the palace without informing me? What is my mistake? Is this your dharma? You brought me from another family after wedlock and now went away leaving me all alone. You left your wife to face her problems on her own. How could you leave without even informing me and fondling your son? Do you think God will take you to heaven after this unfair act she was weeping and became unconscious.
"
|
"
Buddha's heart melted. 'What my wife said is true. Should I go back to my family? My body is emaciated but I could not see any happiness so far. Shall I give up my pursuit of happiness?' He believed only in God. 'My Lord, you are really present somewhere. I really want to see you. You must direct me from within me. What is my duty now? I belong to you, not even to myself. I surrendered to you.'
"
|
"
'Sarva dharman parityajya mamekam saranam vraja' The Lord said in the Gita to give up all dharmas and surrender only to him. When Sankaracharya was ready to leave the world, he gave a poignant message. 'Mata nasti. jagrata jagrata' Be careful, my children. Your mother is certainly precious; your father is valuable but how long your parents live? How long will the link with your house last? Your house will remain as such but you will leave it one day. This is what Sankaracharya preached towards the end.
"
|
"
Well, Buddha's wife was overcome with sorrow and fainted. He firmly thought 'Every object in this world must leave some day. Lord Krishna left when his chariot arrived; Lord Rama and Sita also left. Then what be said about us, lower beings? We also will certainly leave the world. My wife will also leave. Then why should I weep for here now and go back? It's sheer stupidity. I will move forward only. I will not weep anymore for these transient worldly objects. I do not want them. I must find out the permanent nirvana bliss otherwise I will die tonight.' As soon as his thoughts took this direction, his vision disappeared, his life vanished. That was maya!
"
|
"
In the next hour, he saw his parents. 'My son, I created the kingdom for you only. Your mother is now old. She became sick and bed ridden with worry. She is crying for you day and night. If you leave her in this state, how can God bless you? She struggled for you all her life. Now you don't have humanitarian feelings for her, you are leaving your mother and going your way. She is looking at me helplessly. What can I do?' Buddha again thought 'Every object on earth must perish one day. God created this world in such a strange way. No object is permanent. Yet he develops attachment for every object. Two facts exist. The object must leave you; you must develop attachment for the object. You must give up something. There is no other option. Why have attachment for a perishable object?' The vision of his parents disappeared.
"
|
"
In the third hour, many beautiful girls came in his vision to lure him. 'We live in a divine, beautiful world. What will your penance fetch you? If you come with us, we will give you all pleasures' He faced both sorrow and happiness in his visions. Sorrow makes him sad but happiness creates desire in him and lures him. He thought 'I came down to earth only because I was tempted by such pleasures. I do not want these worldly pleasures. I don't want those objects which are bound to give me sorrow or pleasure.' This is the last message given by Buddha to the world before Nirvana.
"
|
"
We must learn a lesson from his experience. Why did we descend to this earth? We came because of our desire and pleasure. When man was in the upper world, he saw the jeeva in the lower world enjoying with wealth. The three base desires (dareshana, dhaneshana and putreshana) - body, wealth and sons. These desires pull him down. Wife, children, prosperity - all give him some form of pleasure. He gives in to this attraction and is tempted to enjoy these pleasures. That is his downfall. We desired and we fell! We got this body only because we wished for it. Similarly wealth and wife are our own wishes. These three forces are the prime reasons for pulling us down, said the Vedas.
"
|
"
Woman is one reason; wealth is one reason; the most important reason is sons. King Dasaratha performed the 'Putrakamesti' yagna (praying to God to grant him a son) Then Rama and his brothers were born. Finally the situation arose when Rama had to leave his father and go to the forest for 14 years. He wept 'my son, my son! You are leaving me' He died with that grief within no time. With all this attachment for his son, he still left the body. So every worldly object is only temporary. Don't develop too much attachment for anything or anybody. It does not mean that you should like somebody.
"
|
"
By all means, have your own sentiments. Serve your family; amass wealth and prosperity; live comfortably in your own life. Absolutely no problem but remember never think that you cannot live without them. This is the final message of many maharishis. Look after your body but don't live in the fear that it will leave one day and weep for that. Be ready for the time when you will receive the call to leave the body. It will certainly come some day! You must simply leave, that's all.
"
|
"
Many scriptures advise you to contemplate on death instead of God. When you remember death all the time, you will leave the world one day and the sorrow will not be so much.
"
|
Nanna appreciated how Buddha conquered the three worldly desires particularly his attachment for pleasures. From this experience, Nanna derived that message that we must not become attached to the objects which give joy or sorrow. Our Radhasakhi emphasized that we must not develop attachment towards any worldly object because they all are temporary. He gave us the idea to overcome fear of death. He bluntly said that we must not reach the state where we cannot live without worldly objects. Through explaining Buddha's mental struggle before nirvana, Nanna gave an invaluable lesson to mankind.
|
"
Under these circumstances (downfall of human beings), God came to this world in the form of a little girl. Other incarnations were named by sages but no rishi gave a name to Radha Devi. Her intrinsic nature gave Her that name. 'Radhnothi sakalan Kaman tasmath Radhethi keerthitha' there is nothing that She cannot accomplish. Krishna and Narayana also admitted that they could not do some tasks but nothing is impossible for Her. That is why She is Radha! (Radhinchuta means accomplishing) so nobody actually named Her.
"
|
"
The religious scriptures reveal that Lord Krishna incessantly meditates on Radha. 'Krishnena aradhyathethi Radha' (Aradhana means worship). She became Radha due to Krishna's worship. She does not need a name. Her life, Her nature, Her acts, Her qualities gave Her the name Radha. Nothing is impossible for Her. You will not find any mention of any task which She could not do in any of Her leelas. If She begins something, it must attain completion. When Sati Devi burnt herself in Dakshya yagya, Radhaji did what nobody else could! She gave Shiva his wife back. Many such instances in Her divine existence made Her Radha!!
"
|
"
How was She born? Fully adorned with jewels, wearing flower garlands and beautifully dressed, She descended from the sky in the early hours at 5 am as a three year old girl. All the Gods informed the world a day in advance through a voice in the sky. 'The great sovereign Mother will arrive early in the morning. Do not miss Her darshan. This is a great chance. She will stay for a short period only. You will certainly repent if you miss this chance.' Many people gathered in Ravali to grace this occasion. Radha came down exactly at 5 am!
"
|
"
Recently we arranged a rasa to be performed. One of the acts depicts Mother's arrival to this world. King Vrishabhanu is pining and weeping for Radha. Finally She came down to be with him. 'O King, you love Me very much but I will stay here only for 10 years. After 12 years, this girl (Mother Herself) will not be seen. She will leave.' Radhaji stayed on earth till She was 12 years old. That is why She is described as 'Sada dwadasa varsheeya' (Always 12 years old!)
"
|
Nanna explained about Mother's message to the world.
|
"
Radhaji gave messages to the world at the age of 5 years. The first message is negative, the second is positive. What is the negative aspect? The worldly object is temporary and perishable. Give some thought before you love any object (animate or inanimate) Remember that it will not remain with you forever. I am not telling you to give up the object. You can love it and serve it. But do be in the bhava that this object must leave one day.
"
|
"
A senior nurse in the hospital constantly serves the patient, may be more than his wife also but when the patient dies, his relatives and friends will weep but the nurse who served him from the beginning till the last minute does not weep why? She has the bhava that 'this object is not mine' while we do not have. That is the main difference. So keep every object, pamper it, spend money on it but remember that your relationship with the object is short lived. This is the negative aspect emphasized by Mother.
"
|
"
What is the positive aspect? This is very important. I worship this positive aspect. Positive is more important than negative. Radha is all pervading. This is the first principle. She is present everywhere. The Vedas and scriptures reiterate this fact. 'Do not forget that worldly objects are not permanent; do not forget that Mother is always with you'. These are the two principles Mother gave to the world.
"
|
Nanna cited the nurse to say that jeeva should be passive towards the world. Stating that this is the negative aspect, he lovingly told us to maintain the positive aspect throughout. 'The all pervading Radhaji is with me all the time.' Saying that 'I worship that positive aspect', he clearly told us what we must do!
|
'Raseswari ... krupa radu kada'
|
The mind that sees sovereign, ruler of rasa, Sri Radha Devi in everything and is filled with divine love is indeed Vaikunta. The mind that is immersed in maya is hell. Your japa and tapa cannot fetch Mother's grace. Without giving up craving for the body, attachments for wife and children, your dhyana sadhana, will not fetch Mother's grace.
